This Week

There is alot on this week if you can fit it in. One of the best things to see is the international speaker @ the Powerhouse. Every year the talks are great, inspiring and something you probably will never get the chance to see again.

This year is Giovanna Castiglione - who is giving a tour of the work of the great Achille Castiglione.....I was lucky enough to visit his studio a few years ago and get an indepth tour, I came out renewed in my enthusisam of design.....wonderful, clever and lots of hard work.
Its on Thursday. I also want to get to the Lace Narratives exhibtion and a few others.....when will I find the time???

That time of year again

Well I have to admit I have been a bit slack this year with blog postings.....but then again I haven't really received a massive response from the student body. Perhaps like me you were all busy doing stuff around town during Sydney Design Week......

So here is what I have been up to...... to kick off design week I ran a masterclass at Gaffa Gallery (in Clarence St). This is a great new design venue, that you should check out. I was given a very open brief around story telling. My role was to direct 4 students from different design schools through to a product. Other than story telling we had to play with shape and balance...... So over 2 days we discussed, drew, discussed, argued and finally made the final design. There were 3 other mentors each with different out comes.....

Design is not only happening in Sydney....on the weekend I was down in Melbourne for Saturday in Design. Kelly and I launched our new Tokyo light with ISM Lighting, here are some pics.

Here are some more pics of the day...

Also not to forget the fantastic opening to the UNSW ID 20 yr Anniversary, last Thursday night, a great chance to look at all we have achieved (I can't believe we have done all that - and that I have been here so long), catch up with many ex students....they are doing amazing things in design.....

iGuzzini design projects

Here are some very innovative designs - similar to what you have been asked to do in this project.

Some are by very famous designers, others by not so famous, hopefully they will all inspire and give you a better understanding of how to approach this subject.

You can see all the projects here: http://www.foodesignguzzini.com/website/eng/main.htm

weekend reading

Not sure if you saw the Sunday Life sipplement of the Sunday Herald yesterday, but there were quite a few articles in there regarding different urban tribes. Above is the one about the new 'female cougar', which I am not sure is real or just a marketing ploy. There was also an extensive article on men and cosmetics, which really describes the current metrosexual. If any of these are your tribe try and get a look at the articles.

All of you should be reading current media and finding out as much as you can on your chosed urban tribe - as well as doing specific research and observations.
Also tonight is the official start to Sydney Design Week 09, it kicks of with the Rotational Moulding exhibition in the gallery of the Red Centre - see you at the opening.

GEN Y

Just talking to the other tutors - we are all abit concerned that there are quite a few groups doing Gen Y. It is very difficult to perspective on a group very similar to your friends. Also many of these groups don't have a a large income, and that makes it difficult to design cutting edge products for.

So if this is you - please be sure you have products for your group - we would perfer you looked and a different generation.

Thanks

are you a kipper? -

They're known as "kippers" - kids in parents' pockets eroding retirement savings - this generation of youngsters know they've got it made at home with mum and dad, and are reluctant to get out on their own.
The latest research from the Housing Industry Association reveals that the proportion of generation Y - those born between 1976 and 1991 - now living at home reached more than 50 per cent in 2006. That means nearly one in five 25- to 29-year-olds is still at home.

This is an exert from an article that recently appeared in the Sydney Morning Heralds Domain section on a Saturday. It is quite insightful to both the life of the 'boomer' parent and that of the 'kipper' child. Read the full article for more....

Here is another great article on travelling grey nomads, which goes into detail about how they travel, what they take with them etc...
